President’s Nominated Charity

Our President has chosen to support a Swansea based charity for fundraising during his year of office.  

In 1988 a group of Swansea parents were inspired to support a local family following the trauma of having their 4-year-old son, Christian, diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer. They worked together to raise funds to send Christian and his family on a once in a lifetime trip to Disneyworld Florida before he died in January 1989. Following Christian’s sad death, the group of parents decided to continue to help other families and the ‘The Christian Lewis Trust Children’s Cancer Charity’ was born (renamed Kids Cancer Charity in 2011).

Children with a life-threatening condition experience a wide range of difficult emotions due to their treatment, it’s effects, hospital admissions and the isolation from friends and family that this brings. Some children we support are palliative and are facing the end of their life.

We offer support through our specialist Therapists, tailored to meet the needs of the children with sessions at our centre, at the child’s home, at school or whilst they are in hospital. From diagnosis through every aspect of treatment and beyond, Play Therapy has a key role to play. Currently working throughout South Wales we can signpost to similar services for families outside of this catchment area, around the UK.

Time away for families in our Holiday Cabins or trips to Disneyland (Paris and Florida), afford an opportunity to step away from hospitals, treatment plans, the physical demands of unrelenting clinical routine and the emotional toll. Our Holiday Programmes give the gift of valuable time spent together, providing respite, time to exhale, an opportunity to recharge and soothe. The restorative benefits can lift spirits, providing hope and adventure; restoring the wonder and excitement of childhood, boosting emotional wellbeing.
